Dr. Marcia Smiley, superintendent of Perry County Schools, has been named a finalist for School Superintendents of Alabama and Schnieder Electric 2024 Superintendent of the Year for District 2. Dr. Smiley was nominated along with superintendents from SSA’s other eight districts.
According to correspondence from the School Superintendents of Alabama, nominated district finalists are distinguished leaders who provide a leading voice in sound public policy development and advocacy, and foster innovative ideas and student achievement. Nominees are held in high regard by the parents, the community, teachers, staff, and superintendents throughout their district as well as by their school board.
Congratulations, Dr. Smiley and thank you for your innovation, love and compassion for our district and community.

Maurice Gunter is a United States Air Force Veteran. He has served with the 3rd Security Forces Squadron (Law Enforcement) Elmendorf, Alaska and 12th Combat Training Squadron, Bartsow, California attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Air Force Mr. Gunter continued his service to the country as an international flight attendant based in New York City, New York, with a military charter airline traveling to over 75 countries. Mr. Gunter's dedication to community and country continued when he joined the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice where he attained the rank of Lieutenant working throughout metro Atlanta. Mr. Gunter's role was not only to ensure safe and secure housing but to assist in developing treatment plans for the youthful offenders. Mr. Gunter volunteered with the Fulton County Juvenile Court System mentoring youth. Mr. Gunter went on join to the Atlanta Braves front office staff as the Senior Security Supervisor supporting numerous community volunteer events across metro Atlanta and the south east region. Mr. Gunter has an Associate Degree in Human Services and is excited to start his journey with Perry County School System as the Truancy Officer.
The Perry County District Leadership Team enjoyed hearing words of encouragement for the upcoming school year from Journalists Sarah Verser -WBRC. We thank Mrs. Verser for her continued support of the Perry County School District.
The Perry County Leadership Team have been preparing for an awesome 23-24 school year. Team members enjoyed the Perry Schools Leadership Retreat entitled "Soaring to a High Reliability School District Hand in Hand One Step at a Time".

Ms. Murtis Files, FMS 21st Century Coordinator, and Ms. Carla Harris, 21st Century Instructor, are attending the 21st Century Learning Centers 2023 Summer Symposium in New Orleans. The two-day event provides State agencies and their grantees with plenary sessions and workshops on successful strategies for implementing and managing all components of their program.
Perry County Schools Mental Health Services Coordinator, teachers and nurses are attending MEGA 2023. They will spend the week learning, growing and collaborating.
The District’s Leadership Team is attending the Making Schools Work Conference in Orlando, FL. During this conference our team members will be actively engaged in various professional development sessions, equipping themselves with the latest and most effective educational practices.
Francis Marion Math Specialist, Mrs. Sylvia Cook, along with SREB Instructional Coach, Mrs. Gail Snider presented at the Making Schools Work Conference in Orlando, Fl. Their presentation was entitled “Engaging Students in Assignments that Matter”. We are very proud of you, Mrs. Cook!
Perry County Schools is pleased to introduce and welcome Mrs. Angelica Davis to her new role as Principal of Francis Marion School.
Mrs. Angelica Davis is a native of Selma, AL. She is a dedicated educator with a passion for fostering students' interest in education and building capacity in teachers. Mrs. Davis has made significant contributions to various school districts throughout her career with a strong background in elementary education and instructional leadership.
Mrs. Davis holds a Master of Science in Instructional Leadership. She also holds an Education Specialist, Masters, and Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, all earned from Alabama State University in Montgomery. She displays a commitment to continuous learning as she is currently researching Doctoral studies opportunities in Curriculum and Instruction.
Mrs. Davis’s professional journey has seen her assume roles of increasing responsibility. As an Assistant Principal at Francis Marion School, Marion, AL and School of Discovery, Selma, AL, she played a pivotal role in the overall administration of these institutions, including stepping in as principal in the absence of the leader. She excelled in assisting with managing daily operations and providing support to teachers. As a Mentor Teacher at Hayes K-8 School, she supported and guided early-career teachers in effective instructional techniques at her school. Mrs. Davis also served as Leader Teacher as her team was selected Elementary Team of the Year for the 2021-2022 school year. Her contributions extended beyond the classroom no matter where she served. Mrs. Davis actively participated in interviewing prospective teachers as an Interview Panel Member at Fitzpatrick Elementary. With her strong leadership skills, Mrs. Davis has been involved in various leadership and committee roles, such as being a Leadership Team Member and Budget Committee Member at Knox Elementary and a facilitator at the Selma City Schools District Summer Conference 2016. Mrs. Davis demonstrated great potential for a thriving profession during her initial year as an educator at Evergreen Elementary School. She accomplished the district's mandate of ensuring that every student under her tutelage achieved mastery of grade-level standards, with 80% or higher proficiency in both reading and math.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Davis has consistently demonstrated a commitment to educational excellence and student success. Her passion for inspiring young minds, coupled with her strong instructional leadership abilities, make her a valuable asset to any educational institution.
Meet Our New Principal!
We are pleased to introduce and welcome Mr. Boris Hurst to his new role as Principal of Robert C. Hatch High School.
Boris Hurst graduated from Overton High School in Memphis, Tennessee. He served in the United States Army Reserves for several years while pursuing a Bachelor of Science from Alabama A&M University. After Mr. Hurst obtained an undergraduate degree, he earned a Master of Education degree from Cambridge University and an Educational Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University. He also taught with Atlanta Public Schools at Archer High School and Booker T. Washington High School.
Mr. Hurst pursued an administrative career in education and served as assistant principal and later as principal of George Washington, Carver High School, and D.M. Therrell High School. While serving as principal of The School of Business and Entrepreneurship at the Therrell Educational Complex, Mr. Hurst implemented the Senior Seminar Series, which equipped students for college readiness through the application process for colleges and scholarships, college tours, S.A.T. prep sessions, and college mentors. Eleven Alive News featured a story for the "Beat the Odds Award" which highlighted Mr. Hurst and a student. He has also been a presenter at the High Schools That Work Conference. In addition to his school accomplishments, Mr. Hurst has been recognized by Who's Who Among American Educators and is a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Mr. Hurst served as the principal of Booker T. Washington High School Senior Academy. In 2010, Mr. Hurst led a new Single-Gender High School. B.E.S.T. Academy High School at Benjamin S. Carson is Atlanta Public Schools' first all-male high school. In 2014, Mr. Hurst took on an opportunity as Center Manager/Director of the Head Start and Pre-K program in Jefferson County. In 2020, Mr. Hurst opened his business- Hurst Enterprises/The Barbershop on Skyland. In addition, he was a candidate for the City Council in his hometown of Tuscaloosa. With a desire to return to public education, Mr. Hurst joined Montgomery Public Schools from 2021 to 2023 as lead career technology teacher and summer school principal. In July of 2023, Mr. Hurst accepted and became the principal at Robert C. Hatch High School in Uniontown, AL.
